Erastus and James W. Shepherd family letters and songs, 1861-1863, 1873, 1918, n.d.

Chiefly letters from brothers Erastus and James W. Shepherd, who were stationed in North Carolina and Virginia, to their parents in Henderson County, N.C., describing their experiences as Confederate soldiers. Both men died in the fighting. The letters detail the oftentimes desperate plight of Confederate privates, but also document the brothers' day-to-day, ordinary activites. The collection also contains two letters from other Shepherd family members: from John Shepherd to "sister" (1873); and a letter from "Mother"(1918). There is also a sheet of song lyrics for "Swing Low Sweet Chariot " (n.d.). In addition, the collection contains biographical information on Erastus and James, handwritten and typed transcripts of the 20 original letters and lyrics, and one electronic computer file containing the typed transcripts.
